Greenways of France # 2: The greenway of Lake Annecy

The Annecy lake greenway is one of the oldest in France. It takes cyclists, rollerbladers and pedestrians along the lake and through several villages. This route is simply laid out in a dream setting.

Tvery rolling and well secured, the greenway of Lake Annecy is arranged along the west shore of Lake Annecy. The route is laid out on the right-of-way of the old railway line which once linked Annecy to Albertville. With its 33 kilometers and only 20 meters of elevation gain, this course is ideal for families. The exceptional view of the lake and the Alps is an invitation to relaxation and contemplation. The grandiose natural Haut-Savoyard setting of this greenway will delight young and old.

The route of the greenway of Lake Annecy

From Annecy, you will drive east on the RD 1508 for 3,5 kilometers, before continuing on a track completely independent of the roads. You will cross the municipalities of Sevrier, Saint-Jorioz, Duingt (with a tunnel passage), Doussard, Lathuile, Giez, Faverges, Saint-Ferréol before ending your journey in Val de Chaise. Then you will walk along the foothills of the majestic Semnoz on your right and the luminous Lake Annecy on your left. Finally, you will admire in turn on the eastern shore, the Veyrier and Baret mountains, then the Roc de Chère.

Breathtaking landscapes will be waiting for you and several beaches will open their arms to you for a refreshing swim before getting back on the road. When you leave the shores of the lake before arriving in Doussard, do not hesitate to venture into the Bout-du-Lac nature reserve. This large wetland is home to more than 650 iconic plant and animal species, such as the beaver.

Around Lake Annecy

For the most daring cyclists, it is possible to achieve the complete tour of the lake, but the additional 20 kilometers connecting Annecy-le-Vieux to Doussard via Veyrier-du-Lac and Talloires are not officially converted into a greenway. Indeed the route is in the course of development. 13,5 kilometers are on green lane, 3,5 km on multi-functional cycle lane and 3 km on shared lane. There is no dedicated development on the Veyrier-du-Lac and Menthon-Saint-Bernard crossings. The green lane should do it all around Lake Annecy by the end of 2020.

A rich historical heritage

People have inhabited the shores of Lake Annecy for 5000 years. The lakeside villages of the Neolithic have given way to the vicus of Boutae from the Roman period, then to the medieval villa of Aniciaca. The Palace of the Island built in the XNUMXth century by the Lords of the Island, throne on the Thiou, and the castles of the Dukes of Savoy route bear witness to the imprint left by the Savoy dynasty. Many guided tours are organized in old Annecy, but also in the heart of the villages of the lake.
