In the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur region, between sea and mountains, the Var department has exceptional natural sites.
The Var department takes its name from the eponymous river which was once its eastern limit. After the annexation of the County of Nice to France, the Department was cut in half. The eastern part was then attached to the Alpes-Maritimes where the Var river now flows. This wooded and mountainous territory plunges into the Mediterranean. It thus offers no less than 420 kilometers of coastline, islands included.
The essentials of the Var
The Var department is incredibly geologically and environmentally rich. It results a diversity of extraordinary landscapes. From the Gorges du Verdon and Lake Sainte-Croix to the north, Port Cros National Park or even in the Estérel massif and its sublime ledge to the south, the panoramas are breathtaking. The Var is also charming towns and villages, such as Fayence, Aiguines, Seillans, Bormes-les-Mimosas, Bandol or even Saint-Tropez.
Remarkable natural sites
Difficult to name all the remarkable natural sites of the Var. Let us note at least the Maures and Estérel massifs, the grand canyon of the Verdon gorges, the lower Verdon gorges, the Sainte-Baume massif, the islands of Porquerolles, Port-Cros and Levant, or the 3 capes and Pampelonne.
With such a diversity of landscapes, the Var is full of perfect spots for practicing outdoor sports. Sailing, canoeing, kite-surfing, diving on the coast ... Kayaking and canyoning in the Verdon gorges ... But also mountain biking and hiking in the various massifs. The Var is a true paradise for outdoor sports enthusiasts.
The Var is also a land of history. Thoronet Abbey, the cloister of Fréjus, the villa Noailles, the Saint-Maximin basilica attract many visitors each year. Several museums are also to be discovered. The museums of the red faces, Terra rossa, the navy, or the citadel, are the most popular. And the Var is of course also the summer residence of the President of the Republic, the famous Fort Brégançon.
