The essentials of the Gironde department
The dune of Pilat, the Arcachon basin, the Banc d'Arguin… The coastal path of Gujan-Mestras, the oyster ports… But also Bordeaux and its sumptuous heritage… The Gironde is overflowing with exceptional sites to discover as quickly as possible. On the vineyard side, some of the most prestigious appellations come from the work of Gironde winegrowers. Saint-Emilion, Sauternes, Pomerol and so many others await you there.
Remarkable natural sites
Among the natural sites, it is impossible to ignore the ascent of the dune of Pilat and its breathtaking view of the ocean. Less known, but just as magnificent, the path of the corniche in Bourg-sur-Gironde, runs along the estuary at the junction between the Gironde and the Dordogne. The Prés Salés d'Arès and Lège-Cap-Ferret nature reserve is a journey to meet flora and fauna, between fresh and salt water. The ornithological reserve of Teich offers an immersion in a preserved natural space, meeting more than 200 species of birds.
Outdoor sports
With its pine forests, long sandy beaches and estuary, the Gironde is a paradise for lovers of outdoor sports. On foot, by bike, on horseback, by sail or by canoe, the opportunities are everywhere. Sailing, surfing, mountain biking, hiking… Everything is possible. And cyclotourists let themselves be seduced by the portion of the Vélodyssée linking Arcachon to Léon.
Historic sites
When you come to Gironde, do not miss Saint-André Cathedral in Bordeaux and Place de la Bourse. As for the castles, that of Roquetaillade, or the castles of Chambrun and Guiraud are magnificent. The Fort of Médoc et the Citadel of Blaye are also buildings not to be missed. On the ocean front, it is Cordouan lighthouse that appeals to visitors.
