the Hautes-Alpes

Endowed with an exceptional ecological capital, the Hautes Alpes keep away from the main roads and the crowds. Provençal by the sun which warms the crisp mountain air, by the clemency of their summers and also by the touch of Provençal accent which is added to the mountain patois and the local cuisine. It is a unique territory located at the gates of Ecrins National Park which preserves natural spaces of great beauty. Torrents and waterfalls flood the bottom of the valleys with coolness where the villages and hamlets with their typical charm nestle. Its mountain setting is majestic, with its larch forests, high-altitude lakes, glaciers and above all its peaks bearing the prestigious names of the Écrins massif. In winter, it is popular for its ski resorts like Les Orres. In summer, for its wild landscapes and exceptional sites.

Briançon and Mont-Dauphin

5 minutes from camping, you will have the opportunity to discover two cities. Briançon et Mont Dauphin are particularly beautiful and lively, both listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Visiting these major sites allows you to understand part of Vauban's genius, which is particularly spectacular in these mountain sites.

Briançon and its fortifications

In Briançon, Vauban, constrained by the terrain, could not follow any pre-established system. He designs a vertical staggering of urban defenses and recommends the creation of a belt of forts reinforcing the defense of the city. The heart of Briançon is in the picturesque Vauban citadel, at the foot of the castle. You can admire the various historical monuments there such as the collegiate church of Notre-Dame, the church of the Cordeliers, the colorful old residences, the Place d'Armes or the fountains and sundials which decorate the alleys. The city comes alive each year to the rhythm of its events such as the Altitude Jazz Festival, the medieval festival or the Offenbachiades. In winter, Briançon becomes a very popular ski resort in the Southern Alps. Particularly popular, it is part of Serre-Chevalier Vallée.

Mont Dauphin

The installation of Mont-Dauphin on a plateau allowed the construction of a stronghold. Built on a rocky outcrop, 1 meters above sea level, at the junction of the Gorges du Guil and the Durance valley, Mont-Dauphin is a prestigious example of European military architecture. It symbolizes the archetype of a mountain bastion built by Vauban. The site overlooks a strategic crossroads to observe the enemy coming from the surrounding area. Vauban wanted to make Mont-Dauphin a garrison town where civilians could mingle with the military to avoid seeing the latter desert.

Landscapes of the Hautes-Alpes

This 100% natural park is astonishing for its cultural diversity and its artisanal production. Izoard and Agnel are the essential passes.

Lake of Serre-Ponçon

A link between Provence and Dauphiné, it offers a blue parenthesis in the heart of the Southern Alps. It is the second largest artificial reservoir in Europe and a sublime destination for all water sports and fishing.

With Serre Chevalier, Montgenèvre and La Grave-La Meije, Briançonnais is a territory resolutely turned towards winter sports and summer mountain activities.

It is the southernmost of the sectors of the Ecrins National Park. This is where the Durance widens.

With its facades in pastel shades, its pedestrian and shopping streets, Gap combines modernity and quality of life.

Champsaur Massif

Between Grenoble and Gap, the Champsaur is a wide valley of groves, with landscapes as varied as they are green, where the Drac flows.

Vallouise Valley

Pelvoux-Vallouise in summer is the meeting of two villages Pelvoux and Vallouise today unified into a single municipality.

The road to the great Alps

From Thonon-les-Bains to Menton, the mythical route of the Grandes Alpes stretches over 700 kilometres. It allows you to discover the valleys and passes that make up the richness of the Alps. Galibier, Lautaret, Izoard… The route enters to the north via the Col du Galibier followed by the Lautaret, then runs along the Guisane to the fortified town of Briançon. There, the route takes the Col Izoard via the impressive Casse Déserte to plunge into the Queyras massif. The descent is made through the village of Arvieux then ventures into the winding Gorges du Guil to Guillestre. For the last stage, the route runs along the Val d'Escreins nature reserve to the Col de Vars. The path continues in the Alpes de Haute-Provence. By car, motorcycle or bicycle, this roaming often used by the Tour de France and the Giro is one of the essentials on sunny days.
