Do you know the Hautes-Alpes?
The Hautes-Alpes department is undoubtedly the highest in France. Located to the south of the mountain range of the Alps, it is appreciated by holidaymakers for its tourist destinations, both in winter, for its ski resorts such as Les Orres, that in summer, for its wild landscapes and exceptional sites such as the Queyras Regional Natural Park, Buëch country or the lake of Serre-Ponçon.
Sublime panoramas, mountain villages and happiness await travelers who roam the landscapes of the Hautes Alpes. Opt for the app all trails and discover the hikes around the camping. Briançon is the nearest town, 5 minutes from camping. This is the opportunity to discover two cities: Briançon et Mont Dauphin particularly beautiful and lively, both listed as World Heritage by Unesco.
The visit of these major sites allows to understand a part of the genius of Vauban, particularly spectacular in these mountain sites.
Briançon and its fortifications: In Briançon, Vauban, constrained by the terrain, cannot follow any pre-established system. He conceived a staggering of urban defenses vertically and advocated the creation of a belt of forts to strengthen the defense of the city. The heart of Briançon is located in the picturesque Vauban citadel, at the foot of the castle. You can admire the various historical monuments such as the Notre Dame collegiate church, the Cordeliers church, the colorful old residences, the Place d'Armes or the fountains and sundials that decorate the alleys. The city comes alive every year to the rhythm of its events such as the Altitude Jazz Festival, the medieval festival or the Offenbachiades. In winter, Briançon becomes a very popular ski resort in the Alpes-du-Sud. Particularly popular, it is part of Serre Chevalier Vallée. The ski area is located at the gates of the Ecrins National Park, dominated by Mont Prorel. Its geographical location, near the Italian border on one side and Provence on the other, gives it pride of place.
Mont-Dauphin, an emblematic stronghold: In Mont-Dauphin, the installation on a plateau has made it possible to create a stronghold, remarkably preserved, from scratch. Built on a rocky outcrop, at an altitude of 1050 m, at the junction of the Gorges du Guil and the Durance valley, Mont-Dauphin is a prestigious example of European military architecture. Mont-Dauphin symbolizes the archetype of a mountain bastion built by Vauban. The site overlooks a strategic crossroads, an ideal place to observe the enemy coming from the surrounding area. Vauban wanted to make Mont-Dauphin a city garrison where civilians could mix with soldiers in order to avoid seeing the latter desert.
